Preferred Drug List
The State Health Plan created a preferred drug list to promote clinically appropriate utilization of pharmaceuticals in a cost-effective manner. In consultation with the Plan’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, the list was developed based on safety, effectiveness and clinical outcomes. If these factors indicate no therapeutic advantage among the drugs being considered in the same drug class, then the State Health Plan considers the net economic impact of such drugs when recommending drugs for inclusion on the list.

- Print out the preferred drug list and take it with you when visiting your doctor.
- Ask for generic medications. All generics are considered preferred medications.
- Ask your doctor to authorize a generic substitute whenever a generic is available. You will save money using generic drugs since the copayment is just $10 for a 34-day supply.
- When there is more than one brand drug available for your medical condition, it is suggested that you ask your physician to prescribe a drug on the preferred list. This will reduce your copays.
