Specialty Care

Specialty medications are injectable products that require special handling and patient monitoring. Some conditions, such as anemia, hepatitis C, multiple sclerosis, growth hormone deficiency and rheumatoid arthritis are treated with specialty medications.

Medco’s Specialty Pharmacy, Accredo Health Group, can provide you with a variety of services that makes obtaining and using your specialty medications more convenient.  For example, Accredo provides:

  • Access to nurses who are trained in specialty medications
  • Answers to your questions about specialty medications from a pharmacist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Free expedited shipping
  • Free supplies necessary to administer your medication (needles, syringes)
  • Refill reminders

If you use specialty medications (PDF, 51 KB), you or your physician may request your medication through the Accredo Pharmacy. You may continue to use your local pharmacy to fill your specialty medication prescriptions; however, using the Accredo Pharmacy will save valuable health plan costs. Your physician may order your specialty medication by accessing the Accredo Web site, completing  the condition specific form with the requested information and then faxing the completed form to the number on the form. A list of the specialty medications available through this service may be accessed on this Web page by clicking here.

Out of state Specialty Pharmacy Change

As of 11/1/07 out of state Specialty Pharmacies will no longer be a part of the pharmacy network for dispensing specialty medications.  Because of this change, if you continue to purchase your specialty medications from an out of network pharmacy, you will be responsible for paying the total amount of your prescription at the time of purchase.  You will be required to file a paper claim with Medco for reimbursement, and you will be responsible for any amount above the State Health Plan’s cost and your copay.

To confirm the pharmacies where you can obtain your specialty medications please call 1-800-501-7260.
